Mortal Kombat’s creative director assured anxious fighting game fans that, even though the next MK is not currently in production, he plans on bringing innovation to the next title.
Speaking with CVG, Boon stressed the importance of providing fans with a fresh experience that does more than just expand upon the existing roster. Bringing innovation to every new installment of a well-known franchise is crucial to prolonging the profitability and demand of any property, and it’s good to see that some developers know this in a time where annual franchises reign supreme.
This is where the interview became interesting. As previously discussed, Ed Boon plans on making the next Mortal Kombat more innovative than its predecessor, and apparently plans on doing so by developing the game on a next-gen console.
“I’m a big fan of fighting games, but some of them I’ve seen are just a re-skin of the same game with much prettier graphics and new characters. Effectively it just delivers the same experience, and over the course of time these games sell less and less and less and less. I think you need to offer something that hasn’t been done before. Like with Injustice, no one has done what we’re doing with the game’s backgrounds, and I think that’s a big part of why it will appeal to fans.”
Mortal Kombat isn’t a series that Warner Bros. Interactive or NetherRealms Studios will let fall by the wayside and everyone knows that, but there’s still a certain level of excitement that comes with any drop of new info on the game. With the next generation of consoles on the not-to-distant horizon, there will be plenty of innovations within the industry.
Now, let’s see how well Boon and his team do at appealing to their core fan base, while still innovating a genre with some spectacular new tech.
