Pittsburgh is looking to trade up in the first round, according to a report from ESPN, which cites unidentified league sources. The team is “exploring the best ways to address” its defensive needs, the report says. The Steelers finished last season with a 9-6-1 record and missed the playoffs. They currently hold the 20th overall pick. “In professional football, NFL football, the best way is to draft and keep your own,” Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert said this week....

In a move that has become an annual, early-season tradition for the league, the NFL is backing away from an officiating point of emphasis established in the offseason. The league’s crackdown on offensive holding in 2019 has led to, according to ESPN, a 16.2 percent increase in total penalties compared to last year, including a 66 percent increase in offensive holding penalties. Per ESPN, “the NFL held a conference call Saturday night with its 17 referees to address a surge of flags for offensive holding this season, an effort to get the entire officiating department on the same page moving forward....
